To me, the pure landscape stirs the call to paint more than any other subject. Jan Monchablon’s Early Afternoon immediately resonated when choosing a Haggin collection piece from which to take my inspiration for Full Sun: American Women Artists Illuminate the Haggin Museum.
Growing up as I did in West and Central Texas, a vast landscape and warm days with only a single cloud in view sprinkled the calendar more than any wet, humid, or cloudy day. In my piece, Lone Cloud, I wanted to evoke the solitary feeling of that single, almost stationary cloud having its moment above a Texas landscape. I chose spring greens to visually meld with the pale blue in the sky to heighten the feeling of the midday heat that pulls everything into its grasp. Though this is a small piece, I hoped to also communicate a sense of quiet depth and the agrarian nature of much of the Texas landscape.
*UPDATE: this piece won the Distinguished Achievement Award for Landscape, Seascape, or Cityscape in the AWA Haggin Museum show.
